Item 635 — I Don't Hide Who I Am, picture 1 of 1
The only picture of this piece
The words on this page
I don't hide who I am
I'm not that kinda man... anymore
On what I do not know
I don't speak

My identity used to be
being superior to the inferior
Yet that just made me average at best
And most often even less

The best place for a lie is in between two
truths
Sometimes a girls' pretty eyes blind you
[crossed out text]
and disguise what otherwise would act as proof

The words on this page
Well the mountains have no snow
But that won't last very long we both know
For once the trees have lost their leaves
So it seems nothing much will grow
And while the nights are becoming longer
With every sunset and sunrise
Our love becomes just a little bit stronger
I will always remember this December
I could never forget
Find myself humming the same tune
I started in June
Half way around the world
Is the birthplace of my girl
In a land with no oceans
Is where I found my pearl

I RABBLE THE ROUSE
I BURN DOWN THE HOUSE
I DO WHAT'S NO ALLOWED
I am dissident
proud

There are too many lives lacking purpose
Yet so many with misplaced ambition
Just what's the point of existence
If you spend your entire life going fishing
I never understood remedial repetition
By those who could make a real difference

They end up selling their soul
For a few dollars a pound
All the while believing they're fully in control
Sometimes I wonder if they've ever stopped and
looked around
Perhaps they're too busy managing their bankroll

Yet people still surely cry

Lines form to stare at the sunset
Falling over Great Misery Island
Yet people stand with their head down
And even the children are all silent

You know I was a councilor at a leper colony once

Like lend me your ear and give me a hand
Yeah... I was a councilor at a leper colony once

The words on this page
I found a cat
living in a boat
And the boat is in my yard
All summer it has sat there
Covered up by a tarp

And there's a skunk
Sleeping underneath a plow
When the cat goes to bed

Then the skunk comes out
That's what this world is
coming to
My back yard has become a zoo
Image the farms are even worse than this
when you can barely fit all the people in
There's no place left for any animals to live

1 A . . . . . B It's the change that we needed
2 A . . open . . B Just in the nick of time
3 A . . . . . B Four hundred years of pain's been defeated
4 A . . open . . B Not through war but a ballot box line
5 A . . . . . B Though History can never be deleted
this chapter to date is sublime
Black Face in the window of a white house
Watching the former owner says goodbye
He's packing up his bags and finally moving out
Kinda ironic this time it's the white guy
who's heading back down south
As he hands over the keys you can hear him sigh
MLK may have had a dream...
Almost fifty years is past
That dream is fast
Fifty years later that dream is real
Today's the day the times have changed
the day the wounds have healed

I usually settle for second best just to make doe

But this is not my system it's the way I found it
What do you expect just one man to do?
We're not taught to change the system
We're only taught to obey
Never a lesson on how to start a revolution
Only lessons on the price we'll pay
The students in class have been rearranged
But the teachers are still shackled to the same old chain
Told to teach what history has taught
Though history repeats itself and the more
things change the more they remain the same
Racism segregation
Prostitution Revolution
Old solutions revolutions

BUT I CAN STAND DEFIANT
TAKE BACK THE SOAP BOX
KNOCK HIM OFF IT

AND TELL EVERYBODY
ANYONE WHO'LL LISTEN
THAT DON'T MAKE IT GOOD
(Just 'CAUSE) IT'S PRETTY
AND IT GLISTENS
OH NO... OH NO

THAT DON'T MAKE IT RIGHT
EVEN IF A LOT OF PEOPLE BELIEVE IT
SINCE MAN HAD FLAME
SINCE BIRDS TOOK FLIGHT
HISTORY'S THE SAME
EXCEPT FOR THE NAMES GET
CHANGED
WE LEARN TO READ
AND WE LEARN TO FIGHT

WE'RE TAUGHT TO BELIEVE
THAT OUR SIDE IS RIGHT
THE SUN IS SHINING DOWN ON US

FROM A DISTANCE
Every day thousands of people
can be seen here walking Downtown
They pass the pizza parlor, gaze out
upon the harbor, there's so many
sights and sounds
Some are smiling like young children
while others are looking at the ground
still more stand with hands in pockets
at the soap boxed man thinking get off it
I see a man waiting for someone, for anyone
Yet as for me I'm searching for one specific
face in the crowd
10 From a distance I saw someone that
That looked [?] I thought was you
10 As I tried to quell these anxious feelings
I realized it was the siluette of a stranger
The sun is quite revealing
---
I'm writing
{struck: This is} my last will and testament
For I've {struck: found myself trapped in a} battle again
{struck: before being sent one into}
I have suffered defeat and tasted victory
Long after {struck: this war} I expect {struck: this war} fought for my country
As {struck: I} I sigh {struck: and then} I close my eyes
As I recall all the things that I fight for...
One, two, three small children down at my feet
And My daughter's who's grown up yet I never see {struck: with me}
My dear Helen who's always been {struck: where} {struck: one}
Certainly my family has always {struck: been} {struck: the} world to me

I wrote a letter to myself
But it was meant for someone else
---
I've got a brand new method to my madness
And very simply stated
This life I lead I hate it
Through all I have seen I have become so jaded
The only place I've left to look for help is inside
There's none that I trust enough to be my guide
Thus I am a victim to [illegible] what I've created
Become trapped in a time so antiquated

13 Waking up to a cold and breezy september morning
13 You feel uneasy without any kind of warning
13 Perhaps you had a bad dream that you can't remember
13 door in your mind burst at the seams you had to enter
9 Ghosts from your past are no longer trapped
9 And they are slowly gaining control
9 Skeletons from your closet now ask
9 Will you finally pay us what you owe?
9 Sleeping dogs have all begun to bark
9 There is just no avoiding this fact
9 Each day earlier the sky grows dark
9 Every night the sky becomes more black

The only face I see in the mirror
Belongs to me for it is my own
For the first time in a long time
I woke up all alone

Yet there was sunshine
Pouring in through the window
The morning started off cold
But it got better from there

It seems like a lifetime - ago
The last time I had found myself - here
I fought and beat my pride Made a deal with my ego
Now that My other half has disappeared

The town was empty and the streets were clear
Seems the whole world left me yet I'm not scared
Everyone had retreated back to from whence they came
At least now I finally knew everybody by name

And we all got along just fine
Giggling and laughing
Having a grand old time

Best Friends 'til the end
Me, myself and I

I'm writing my last will and testament
For I've found myself caught in a battle again
Long after I fought for my country
I've found myself in a different war 12 But now I Find myself trapped in a different war
And so much has changed 12 so much has changed I'm not the same man I was before.
I'm not the same man I was before 12 and a flurry of scattered thoughts I sigh and close my eyes
And as I sigh I close my eyes
As I recall all the things that I now fight for

One, two, three... small children playing down at my feet 12
And my daughter who's all grown up and yet I never see 12
My dearest Helen who has always been there for me 12
My family has always meant the world to me 12
And my travel 12
Yet in my mind that seeks to go back through time 12

Collect and form new memories, not just look through old photographs 8
I have a heart that longs not to be apart 8
From someone I might not know if I walked past 8
The answers - I have none - so many questions I would ask 8

hello dear 12
My darling Roxanne how are you? 12 Every tear you've cried All the years that I have missed
Won't you take my hand and walk me through 12
All the years that I have missed 12 For so much I long to know I made a list
Your first steps, your first words, your first kiss 12
your first date

My darling Roxanne has this world been good to you 12
Have you found a passion in life - are you seeing it through 12
Won't you take my hand and take a walk with me 12
It is never too late to create a new destiny Fate - between us two we could mold a new destiny 12

My darling Roxanne everyday I've thought of you 12
Look behind the tears in my eyes - I speak the truth 12
I wish things were different - I wish I had 12 make things right
I'd have cooked you breakfast every morning - read you a story every night 12
My darling Roxanne 12
There's been 12 enjoyed this time with you 12
Countless conversations 12 dad 12 between us 12
Time and time 12 I've dreamed up 12 the words spoken were 12
And 12 myself - yet the same 12

I walk the beach this summer's day
I can feel the sun but it's so out of reach
Do I want her is she the one
Questions asked while walking up and down the shore
Do I wait or has our time past?
Am I treading water in a motionless state?
Is she more mother or daughter?
Are those the same eyes I know - same as I saw before
She left me here and I'm so low
She's probably sitting home and she doesn't care
The ocean's blue, but not alone
We share this song I'm now writing for you

And the rising tide ahead [crossed out: and] down fall
I'm still trying to understand

I won - the game is over now that
She'll come back to me
But while she decided and I never
tried to hide it I caught a taste
of other fish in the sea

The words on this page
I wrote your eulogy
got what I'll read
in my head
But the funny thing is
That you're not dead
Was it wishful thinking
or just planning ahead
Is this admissable
As evidence?
Both
What I wrote and
what I said.
