The best band you probably never heard of
By Tom Jensen
Contributing Writer

A quick check to see if you have a pulse: Have you heard of The Beatles? You good. Bob Dylan and the Band? Yeah? I'm proud of ya' already. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers? Groovy. Now it gets a little harder...Roy Orbison? (Yes, the Pretty Woman song) great!!! Here it is, drum roll please......The million dollar question-Jeff Lynne? No? Don't worry, me neither. But what do these musicians all have in common?
I'd like to introduce you to the Traveling Wilburys: Nelson Wilbury AKA George Harrison of The Beatles, Otis Wilbury AKA Jeff Lynne a.k.a. the guy you've never heard of, Lefty Wilbury AKA Roy Orbison AKA The Dead Guy, Lucky Wilbury AKA Bob Dylan a.k.a. Robert Zimmerman, Charlie T. Jr. Wilbury AKA. Tom Petty.
Who are the Wilburys and what are they about? Take a look at the liner notes contained in volume one:
The original Wilburys were a stationary people who, realizing that their civilization could not stand still for ever, began to go for short walks -not the "traveling" as we now know it, but certainly as far as the corner and back. They must have taken to motion, in much the same way as penguins were at the time taking to ledges, for the next time we hear of them they were going out for the day (often taking lunch or a picnic). The Wilburys began to go away for the weekend, leaving late Friday and coming back Sunday. It was they who evolved simple rhythmic forms to describe their adventures.
A remarkable sophisticated musical [?]ure developed, considering there [?] no managers or agents, and the fur[?] [?]e Wilburys traveled the more their [?]urous their music became, and the more it was revered by the elders of the tribe who believed it had the power to stave off madness, turn brunettes into blondes and increase the size of their ears.
But as the Wilburys began to go further and further in their search for musical inspiration, they found themselves the object of interest among many less developed species of nightclub owners, tour operators and recording executives. To the Wilburys, who had only just learned how to cope with wives, roadies and drummers, it was a blow from which many of them never recovered. They became hairdressers or TV rental salespersons.
But a tiny handful survived and the last of the Traveling Wilburys and the songs gathered here represent the popular laments, the epic and heroic tales which characterize the apotheosis of the elusive Wilbury sound. Good listening, good night and Let Thy Wilbury Done.
Unfortunately, the list of remaining Wilburys has been reduced by one since Roy died. They've been looking for a replacement and have interviewed several candidates, among the noteworthy include Weird Al Wilbury- he sure can polka, Snoop Doggy Wilbury- I'm sure they're trying to find a younger, hipper fan base, and finally there is George Michael Wilbury- even though he hasn't gotten a call back he still has faith
The Wilburys recorded two albums, Volume 1 and Volume 3, but there is no Volume 2. Volume 1 won a 1988 Grammy for Best Rock Performance Group and included such hits as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line" and my personal favorite "Last Night," which became my college life theme song. This band just may be the greatest collection of individual talent ever. Harrison and Dylan are in their own atmosphere as far as rock goes. Petty has had a great career with the Heartbreakers and I've seen Orbison on those greatest hits of the 80's commercials on TV. We still don't know who the heck Otis Wilbury (Jeff Lynne) is or where he came from but the tests aren't back yet.
It is surprising to see such big name stars blend together into the harmony that the Wilburys create. Although I sometimes confuse Petty's voice with Dylan's in a couple of songs (quite a compliment, huh?) I assure you I can tell Orbison from Harrison. If anyone knows who the "Mystery Member" Otis Wilbury is please let me know. He looks a little like Jerry Garcia. If you or your parents have any Wilbury remains remember to treasure them, they might be worth money someday. Even though no one could ever put a price on what the Wilburys mean to me I will trade Volume 1 for Rolling Stones tickets.
