The words on this page
When the yellow Sun is glowing
way way up high
You would never expect to see
Any stars up in the sky
But you know they're up there somewhere
You can see so clearly when all the lights are on
Yet some things can only be seen in the dark
But on those cold lonely nights
While clingin to emptiness so tight
Often is when you feel the spark
You know love is inside you somewhere

Another candle Another year
365 more days that have disappeared
There is no surprise party as far as I can see
And yet tradition is tradition
So I'll sing happy birthday to me
Since it will probably never come true
I'm going to tell you my wish
12 months from now
I long for a soul to share this day with
Because I'm feeling old, sad and alone
Today is my day and I'm sitting here at home
No body knocking on the door
There's no one calling on the phone

So you think you've felt pain?
Why don't you try changing your shoes?
With everything you've gained
How could you feel you've got nothing to lose?
The mountains you've climbed only you know the cost
You know some people have had everything and then lost it all
Even the deepest canyons are able to be crossed
Only if you are afraid to stand will you fall, fall, fall

RUMORS FROM HEAVEN
Now that there's rock n' roll in heaven
Everyone enjoys the hymns
And the only problem that the church has
Is getting everybody in
Hard to tell just how the conversation sounds
When John's head is just about to hit the ground
As the echo of Jerry starts from the corner of the room
Playing long after dark as the echo finds its way around
All the while Jim is already out cold
He bought the ticket but the ride is getting old
The creator never really had a chance
For his disciples could no longer walk straight
The power of song and dance
Unleashed after ages inside the Golden Gate
These guys all got the same room upstairs
And thought their landlord is god still no one seems to care
Sit and scratch their heads wondering
Just who'll come knocking next
Yet time has told them that it's anyone's guess
Everybody's grateful to be dead
Because now they're the house band in Heaven
They sell out every single night
Now that doesn't sound too upsetting
Hey John, it's George who's been knocking at the door
Because of course Paul would've rang the bell
John responded that George must've left the Maharishi
Or else I figured we'd a seen him in hell
There goes Jimi playing again without his hands
Wearing only his headband and his funky underpants
Hey Jerry, go get a bucket of cold water
Let's see if we can get him outta this trance
He's sure can tap dance and he don't eat much
But when Elvis Presley's knocking don't ever let him in
For he'll just eat all of the chips and dip - what a sin
But Sinatra's okay 'cause he always brings gin
Hey who invited Bobby Dylan?
You know we're not allowed to let anyone in early
Keith Richards came all the way up for nothing
But we're sure we'll see him again shortly
John whispers...
No you ain't gonna see what I got in my pocket
But the words that come to me are knock it off and stop it
You want to change your ways but just what's the use?
I have far beyond my years too much pain and abuse
Jim wakes up mumbling something odd...
The day revolves around the tears
That come falling from the serpent's eyes
I hold the pain of the world inside my mind
Because my ears can no longer hear a child cry
My senses crawl beneath my skin
As a man once saw all becomes blind
But they all know George is not the type to be out done
The pressure of the sky falls on your back
The clouds start laughing in your face
The weather changes all the time
So remove your soul within its case
Jerry's still here... let us not forget,
This small little room I once believed to be my prison
Finally for what I've seen and done I've been forgiven
I knew there was someone up there somewhere
But when my feet walked the earth I just did not care
Old Blue Eyes never wants to join in
Unless there's some ladies around
When it's just the guys he's called the Chairman of the Bored
Sitting in some darkened corner trying not to be found
Now there's rock n' roll in heaven
Everyone enjoys the hymns
And the only problem that the church has
Is getting everybody in
Hard to tell just how the conversation sounds
When John's head is just about to hit the ground

Now it sounds pretty sad
But everybody's still waiting for Billy Joel
But even though he's said as hell he's still not that old
Thought they'd settle for Elton John
Because they need someone on the keyboard
When everybody heard he stopped doing coke
They all sang out "oh lord!"
The group is still split about fifty-fifty
Between Madonna and Britney Spears
They'll take anyone but Barbara Streisand
She'll steal the show that what everybody fears
So now you know what you can look forward to
When your day finally comes
Once you get your wings
You don't have to walk up the stairway to get in heaven
Don't have to go chasing a band that is never on the run

I wasn't placed on this earth just to entertain you... I'm here to spread knowledge as well. When my wife told me that she didn't know three people from this poem I decided that I had better make a handy reference guide. For all of us who are familiar with all of these characters I tried to throw out a few interesting nuggets of information here and there just to keep you reading. Generally speaking, the younger you are more you'll need it.
The other reason I made this list is because the poem gets better with knowledge. For instance, take the last two verses of the poem (this one is more of a song, actually): "Once you get your wings you don't have to walk up the stairway to get to heaven... Don't have to go chasing a band that is never on the run." You should also know that Paul McCartney was in a band called "Wings" and in 1973 they had an album entitled "Band on the Run." You should also know that another great rock band from the 1970s named Led Zeppelin came out with a song entitled "Stairway to Heaven." It's a great song. With all of this "new" information presented to you those two lines just became a whole lot better. In the same sense, Sammy Davis Jr. was a very skinny black man who used to tap dance a lot. There are just so many little joke references in this poem in particular that I thought it would be helpful to do this. I got the idea from my commentary on Four Wars: a poem that mentions many figures from history... if you don't know your history then you don't completely understand the poem (and subsequently don't comprehend my greatness in its entirety. He he).
I got the idea for this poem because I was depressed that most of my favorite rockers were dead. I started picturing them all in heaven just sort of hanging out. I thought that it would make for a pretty interesting story so I ran with it. I even tried to write some of the lyrics in a few of the character's own style of writing or thinking. I do a pretty good Jim Morrison impersonation if I do say so myself. Anyone who is about fifty-years-old should get a kick out of this one. I hope you enjoyed it.

Poem 1
Hidden Evils
A crying teen wonders how much more she can handle
While mangy dogs dig through trash and howl at the wind
The priest in the church lights a holy candle
For all of his lost children who have sinned
Son lays awake all night dreaming of tomorrow
Grandmother prays for her soul to be saved
Father works his second job, eyes full of sorrow
Single mother wonders how the bills will get paid
A child born of racists, his heart fills with hate
Paint chips off the walls of the liquor store
An abandoned building becomes home to a family of eight
The donation bin stays empty while collecting for the poor
A pigeon wanders aimlessly unsure of where to look for food
A wrinkled and ripped newspaper blows around in the park
A homeless man sleeping on a bench awakes in a foul mood
As night falls all that's wrong with the world is covered by dark
This poem was an attempt to break my rhyming pattern of consecutive twos. I
am also a fan of this rhyming scheme because it is a little harder for me because
I'm not used to it. I tried to show all the evils in the world that we, as a society,
have a tendency to overlook because they're commonplace. I started by only
rhyming in the 2nd and 4th verses but didn't like the end result so I redid the other
two lines so that they rhymed.

ROCKVILLE -- With a seventh killing now linked to the sniper attacks that are unnerving the region, Montgomery Police Chief Charles A. Moose faces questions about whether the investigation should be taken over by the FBI. Ballistics evidence has tied the slaying of Dean Harold Meyers at a Manassas, Va., service station on Wednesday night to the sniper who has killed seven and seriously injured two in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Because the killer has expanded into a fifth jurisdiction, some are asking whether the FBI, with its extensive experience in hunting serial murderers, should take the lead in the investigation. "All things are possible," Moose said at a noon briefing at police headquarters in Rockville on Thursday. "It really doesn't matter who runs the investigation." But minutes later, in an interview -- eight minutes, no more, he said -- in his office, Moose told The Gazette that the question implied that his police officers do not have the skills to handle the investigation. "That is an insult," he said, shortly after turning off the television in his pin-neat office. "You hear that question and you get defensive." But he, mused, if police do not crack the case soon, it may be smarter for county police to cede leadership to the FBI. "I do have 890,000 residents who need police service," Moose said. "At what point does the distraction become such that police services tend to deteriorate? "It may not be appropriate then to be police chief and obsess over this case." On Tuesday, federal and state officials -- led by U.S. Attorney General John D. Ashcroft -- pledged to help Montgomery County following a formal request from Moose, who is heading the regional task force searching for the killer. State and federal agents have been helping since Oct. 3. Asked about a report in Wednesday's Washington Post that quoted unidentified officers within the task force as saying that work is being duplicated and time wasted on briefings, Moose replied, "Wherever you work, being too close, it's going to be crowded. Is there going to be confusion? Sure." The agencies that came in probably thought the investigation would be over in two days, he said. Finding more space to accommodate the task force is one plan the county is working on to ease the crowding.

WATERING THE WEEDS*
aka Mommy's GIFT TO DAUGHTER
(in margin) reality vs. denial
There's no more secrets
No more hiding what you know is true
And you better believe it
There's no more denying to yourself
No use in lying to everyone else
Self - crucifying... that's exactly what you do
Jesus Christ ! Yeah, he did it too
(in margin) the dream vs. the night mare
What's left to play
When you can't play pretend ?
Just what can you say ?
When you know that it's the end?
This crippling disease has taken its toll
Will never heal, can never mend, will never be whole
No escaping the demons that have taken control
A man who's lost his mind has lost his soul
And once you've lost the love then that's the end
-it's time to go
(in margin) Lost & Loss
While you've been praying for salvation
I've been thinking about all the time that
You've been wasting
You're not a failure
If you're forced to find another sailor
Because the one you've got
keeps crashing into the dock
(in margin) Indecision
He's always running from the cops
After breaking up on the rocks
Seems the madness never stops
In your mind you flip and then flop
Riding a broken down Merry-Go-Round
Wondering when you're getting off?
(in margin) Faith vs. What is
When will you realize that we've all
Just one life to live?
You've got your fingers and your toes
In the cracks of the dam
And you're running out of hands
It's still leaking like a seive
You had better back away
'Cause pretty soon it's gonna give
(in margin) the epiphany
When will you realize that...
#1 You're better off alone
#2 You can't get blood from a stone
When's he coming home?
Don't you think that's a bit too soon?
You are truly your mother's child
If you really believe that this rose is going to bloom
(in margin) Illusion blood
Perhaps it's time to grab the weed wacker
Hiding so many secrets
(Like how many times he's really smacked ya)
Turn off your hose
Stop watering the weeds*
There's already too few flowers
Is this what the world really needs?
(in margin) Endings & Beginnings
*note to the non-symbolic people: watering the weeds
is a reference to enabling

Well there's...
So many things I want to change
The world [written above: and] its ways. All'lbe rearranged
Too busy pointing fingers [struck: unclear] who will pay? Who's to blame?
All the while, the problem lingers. Things still [struck: unclear] stay the same
Well it's...
Been a long time since we truly had something to believe in

She had a reputation for repetition
lots of guys got what they were wishing
Easier than going fishing
Boy, you ain't hidding
like one string fiddling
On burning kindling
Two hand fondling
So quickly she's responding
There's a party in her pants
and I'm tonight's guest of honor
But I don't want her
Even though she's hotter than fire
Do you see this ring on my finger
which means I don't linger
And I'll never be called a liar
---
I gauge lost time through cigarette butts
The more I find myself the more I think I'm going nuts
Simply inherited heredity's got the best of me
---
I need a curtain
so my neighbors wont know what I'm doing
yeah that's for certain
cause last night they caught me screwing
in a light bulb in my underwear
I am gonna hang me a curtain in the
morning
So I wont scare the children
Imagine their little eyes
being taken in by a rapid surprise
As they gaze at their window
Their papa is gonna make my
wife a widow
And my family's feelings
will be at a hilt
Just because I didn't shell out
three hundred pennies
for uncle kenny
He must owe me
I'm dead because a curtain
hang a curtain

My boss here and me
I know we're all
His appreciation right
Though, he's a quick one to bite
His intentions are all right
A man who ends up winning
the game
Built by another man's hands
Who's quick with advice
You need never ask twice
With one roll of the dice
He worked all his life
There's no one left
around to place blame

The only time you ever see the [?]
Is after they creep up from behind
You pat your own back as you think

You came in the door
But you're going out the wind
I hope you don't have a wife
Because shes gonna be a wid
I'll pull up the shades
Because your bed is made
wait to hear the sound
Of you hitting the ground

The only coke I keep is in the fridge
The only place I won't meet you is at the bridge

Disciple of Dirt
What will break the spell?
So many claim to know
Yet so few tell
Why is it so?
Maybe it's just as well?
Just to let it go...
Ah what the hell?
There's only one way to know...
[scratched out text] whether to buy or sell
Which road to go
Only one man [scratched out text] knows
yet down he fell
dirt disciple
What's a [?] like me to do?
No one to follow no one to lead me
A Blind detective in a world full of clues
Only able to be captured no one to free me
So many choices so little time to choose
Want to hide away where no one can see me
[scratched out text] Much to gaind yet even more to lose
Rest in the safety that no one else will ever be me
Book of all my poetry lies dusty on the shelf
My inspiration lost and found by someone else?
Dreams of tomorrow, Ah who the hell even cares?
Everyday we all look in the mirror
A wonder if it's time to face our fears
Burned out, Burned up maybe no flame at all
No desire to climb no risk to fall

CRYSTAL BALL
Indecisiveness has got a hold of me
Should I stay should I go?
The high road the low road
So many forces that push and that pull
They act as they will there acting there still
One of the choices I have to make [illegible - looks like 'do just']
Do I just need a break
How much [illegible - scribbled out] more [illegible - crossed out] can I take
Couldn't sleep for the last month and a half
Need a crystal ball 'cause I broke the glass
Was it half full or half empty
But I can get it refilled they've got plenty
Or at least they tell me so
But just where I still don't know
Maybe around the corner
Maybe half way across the globe
Still I'm just a foreigner
Trapped in the land of job
I don't feel disgraced
I'm just losing my faith
Finding more questions than answers
As the hour's getting late

COVERINGS
I have many hats
I own a fisherman's hat yet I don't fish
Also a birthday hat
Yet I have yet to make a wish
I have a baseball cap
and on it my favorite team
As well as a straw hat
Reminding me of pretty nature scene
A stocking hat upon my ears
I find it strange not upon my feet
And of course a blue [illegible/crossed out] marrow prison
Exposing my scalp to summer's warm heat
Since meeting you I have traded all my coverings
Varying in all shapes and sizes
I now [crossed out] wear proudly a crown of happiness
As each coming day it's height rises

They say these
are the best
years of my life
I aske why then
are they so full of
unsettlement and strife?

Tomorrow is the Day
The times are getting better
They say tomorrow is the day
Maybe then we can live forever [crossed out] or at least all together
It sure sounds good at least that much I'll say
When we live the dream we may finally sleep in peace
Holding and protecting what was once out of reach
The times are getting better
They say tomorrow is the day
Yesterday was history
Time to let it slip away
We all remember Hitler
We all know of bleeding hate
Some still remember the bible
Although they're losing faith
Vietnam still conjures up
Horrid, oppressed memories
We all felt the pain of being born
Beginning our infancy
Let it out, free yourself, it's okay
The times are getting better
They say tomorrow is the day
You built your wall, now let it fall, it's okay
The times are getting better
They say tomorrow is the day
Hope is what we need, seems we found another creed
Finally something to believe, besides learning that we all bleed
We've found eternal Spring
Now we'll see what it will bring
Maybe Countrymen, maybe kings
Maybe even better things
---
Tomorrow
So much to say so little ink,
Too much confusion its hard to think.
Is this a poem or is it a song?
Don't yet know so I'll play along.
Try to gather how I feel,
Like Mr. Jones or the man of steel,
Who am I gonna be when I get old?
Don't wanna be bought and don't wanna be sold.
Life ain't easy but its better than dying,
Gotta fight on, gotta keep on trying.
I gotta good life, I should be glad,
But when she leaves it makes me sad.
Soon she'll realize I'm the man she seeks,
It might take some time even weeks and weeks.
Could take years just who's to say?
Might be in April or maybe in May.
I didn't start on the bottom but I'm moving on up,
I gotta buckle down I've had enough.
Drink and drugs just bring me down,
Probably the reason I get kicked around.
Somebody tell me when things will look bright,
Trapped in a tunnel, searching for light.
I may have a star and it may be blonde
But after years and years I feel no bond.
Should I pack up and move away?
Run from trouble or is it here to stay?

American Dream
I am trying to unlearn what all the teacher's
taught me
I am trying to unlock an original thought
but I have no key
I am trying to believe that it's better than it seems
or at least what I can see
I am trying to achieve the American Dream
of leaving a legacy behind me
I am surely not a rich man but certainly a
wiseman because I understand
That there are greater things than money, sweeter
things than honey in this land
I am angered at my situation as I am
choking on yellow sand
I am a stranger through seperation
from my fellow man
I am not the type to keep out of trouble
I always find myself walking through rubble
I even drive down the streets that state
do not enter
I am not the type to keep many
secrets
Or the type to go out hunting rabbits
Or a man who lets his lady be cold
in the winter
(cut this --- and everything after it to the end of the words box: the Wading in the water / Two of a kind / Two pair notes and Me & Frankie)
(Two of a kind)
(Two pair)
Me & Frankie (1)
We've been best friends for years
And said all we can say
Figured we be at each's side
When it comes down to judgement day
We've had mud at our feet
And dirt in our eyes
But we've never even been
Taken by surprise
We grabbed the world by the neck
Yet our fate still lies
As there is no me and you
In a world full of I's
Both one in the same
Even our circle of friends
Though neither places blame
When it comes down to the end
We know we been through the grinder
While we've been diving for pearls
Some day we'll each find her
That one special girl

The words on this page
Alone again
I hold my self solely responsible
Inside my looking glass
Looking back through the cracks
Did I find the way I meant to go
The answer is yes but not too well
A burning candle
Proves meager
In this world of electricity
Traveling great distances
Can be very hard to handle
Even though I am eager
To build upon my legacy
And meet and greet my destiny
Yet I fear our meeting
May be premature
Slipping and sliding
On mother Natures
Curves and contours
Down the mountain
Off the cliff
Straight on through
To the black abyss
My fault
My path I chose it
My life
my clay I'm the one who molds it
Silence for buts
and Mimes saying what if
I climbed up the mountain
And then fell off a cliff
(cut this --- and EVERYTHING after it to the end of the words box)
My thoughts are flashing like
Bright neon signs
Seperating as if day and night
Both what I want and what is mine
Just the way of the times
Knowledge held in decline
Impulses are in full control
But holding right above wrong
Is considered being old
Extremes rule my universe
Satan coming back
Is just as worse
My heart is beating fast
My love is for a false prophet
I aimed for first but I finished last
Im hooked on getting off it
Tom's Theme Song
---
I am the captain of my mind
Hitting into iceburgs all the time
Noone is as good as me
When I want to be
Yet noone can could never ever
Navigate through deeper waters
Though you try when you name your ship

It is early, although it's late
It has come, so I no longer wait
They set the trap
I took the bait
Out in the wilderness I have
Met my fate
After following tracks
After warding off their attacks
I have built my shelter
There's no turning back
I [?] have looked @ the calender
But have yet to set a date
I've found the error of my ways
But realized it too late
My poetry is my dying word
Some may think that at twenty two
it sounds so absurd
But in my soul I know I'm fading fast
If I die right now I'd like
Something that lasts
I pray I'm not a sheep
Just following the herd
I'm searching for a sun
But it's fading fast
