ERA TOURNEY — THE 1980s — DRAFT NIGHT — VOL1 — 7/11/26 — CANDIDATE BUILD (MIXED)

The video decade. Power seeds only. One era per fighter — 50s, 60s, and 70s rosters are BARRED from this building.

Three decades' worth of legends are locked outside, and the committee STILL had to turn people away. This is the decade the television learned to sing, the decade the single came back from the dead wearing shoulder pads, and the decade two men from Minneapolis and Gary, Indiana turned pop music into an arms race.

THE FIELD (power seeds): 1. Michael Jackson · 2. Prince · 3. Madonna · 4. Bruce Springsteen · 5. U2 · 6. Whitney Houston · 7. Metallica · 8. The Police · 9. Run-DMC · 10. Guns N' Roses · 11. Talking Heads · 12. Van Halen · 13. Janet Jackson · 14. Public Enemy · 15. The Cure · 16. Duran Duran · 17. R.E.M. · 18. Depeche Mode · 19. The Smiths · 20. Def Leppard · 21. Beastie Boys · 22. Bon Jovi · 23. Cyndi Lauper · 24. Tears for Fears

The storyline: the top two seeds are THE rivalry — the on-record, professional, who's-better arms race that defined the decade's ceiling. MJ arrives holding the biggest-selling album in the history of recorded sound. Prince arrives holding a guitar, a belt (One-Person Band, UNDEFEATED, swept both boards), and a look that says he read the seeding and found it amusing. Madonna at three insists the bracket is hers and has the receipts to argue it. Springsteen at four brought a stadium in each hand. Mr. Irrelevant is TEARS FOR FEARS, who would like everybody to shout.

Twelve bouts night one. Bracket-collapse, blessed and permanent. The cameras are ON. That's the whole point of this decade.

ERA TOURNEY — THE 1980s — TITLE FIGHT RESULTS — VOL1 — 7/11/26 — CANDIDATE (MIXED)

Power board. Bracket-collapse format: 12 opening bouts, R12 reseed high-low, R6 double-bye to the semis.

ROUND ONE — TWELVE BOUTS

M1: (1) MICHAEL JACKSON vs (24) TEARS FOR FEARS. Everybody wants to rule the world; one man in the ring already does. WINNER: MJ. The moonwalk in round two is scored as a knockdown by two judges. M2: (2) PRINCE vs (23) CYNDI LAUPER. Girls just want to have fun; Prince just wants to have EVERYTHING. WINNER: PRINCE. Lauper exits in a burst of confetti she clearly brought herself. Respect. M3: (3) MADONNA vs (22) BON JOVI. Jersey's biggest chorus against pop's sharpest strategist. She reinvents twice before the anthem finishes. WINNER: MADONNA. M4: (4) SPRINGSTEEN vs (21) BEASTIE BOYS. Three kids fighting for their right to party meet a man who's been partying with 80,000 people a night for four hours at a stretch. WINNER: BRUCE. M5: (5) U2 vs (20) DEF LEPPARD. Pour some sugar on the Joshua Tree; the tree doesn't notice. Streets have no name and the anthem has no ceiling. WINNER: U2. M6: (6) WHITNEY HOUSTON vs (19) THE SMITHS. Morrissey wants it known he is miserable; Whitney hits a note that cures it. WINNER: WHITNEY. The Smiths exit under a light that never goes out, carrying it like a lantern. M7: (7) METALLICA vs (18) DEPECHE MODE. Synths against thrash. The personal Jesus meets Master of Puppets and the puppets win the exchanges. WINNER: METALLICA. M8: (8) THE POLICE vs (17) R.E.M. Athens jangle against the tightest trio of the decade. Every little thing Sting does is, on this night, magic enough. WINNER: THE POLICE. M9: (9) RUN-DMC vs (16) DURAN DURAN. The yacht meets the block. The block walks this way, in shell toes, straight through the hull. WINNER: RUN-DMC. M10: (10) GUNS N' ROSES vs (15) THE CURE. Robert Smith's eyeliner against Appetite for Destruction. The jungle wins on aggression. WINNER: GN'R. M11: (11) TALKING HEADS vs (14) PUBLIC ENEMY. Bout of the round. Chuck D's air-raid siren against Byrne's big suit. The suit is roomy but the noise is a NATION. WINNER: PUBLIC ENEMY — UPSET. Byrne exits asking, sincerely, how he got here. M12: (12) VAN HALEN vs (13) JANET JACKSON. Eddie's tapping against Control. Rhythm Nation drills in formation and the formation holds. WINNER: JANET — UPSET. Eddie exits mid-solo; the solo continues without him for a full minute.

ROUND OF 12 (reseeded, high plays low)

(1) MJ vs (14) PUBLIC ENEMY. The siren against the smooth criminal. Chuck lands truth in bunches, but Thriller is a fortress with a dance floor on the roof. WINNER: MJ. (2) PRINCE vs (13) JANET. Minneapolis royalty against the other Jackson, and she makes him WORK for every round. Control against Purple Rain: the rain is older and deeper. WINNER: PRINCE. The booth notes the family is now 2-for-2 in bracket appearances against Minneapolis. (3) MADONNA vs (12) GN'R. Axl's snarl against pop's chess master. She takes the crowd's temperature, changes outfits, changes personas, and wins on cards. WINNER: MADONNA. (4) SPRINGSTEEN vs (11) THE POLICE. The two biggest tours of the decade, head to head. Sting sends an SOS; Bruce answers it personally, four hours a night. WINNER: BRUCE. (5) U2 vs (10) RUN-DMC. Hollis against Dublin. The kings from Queens rock the exchanges, but the Joshua Tree grows through the canvas and takes root. WINNER: U2. (6) WHITNEY vs (9) METALLICA. The most improbable style clash of the night. Thrash takes the early rounds on violence; then Whitney plants her feet and holds ONE note until the amps surrender out of respect. WINNER: WHITNEY.

ROUND OF 6 — DOUBLE-BYE: top two reseeds (MJ, PRINCE) advance to the semis on the couch. The building has wanted this since seeding night.

(3) MADONNA vs (6) WHITNEY. The decade's two queens, one ticket to the semis. Madonna wins rounds on strategy; Whitney wins rounds on VOICE. The voice is a natural disaster with perfect pitch. WINNER: WHITNEY. (4) SPRINGSTEEN vs (5) U2. Born in the U.S.A. against The Joshua Tree — the two biggest secular sermons of the decade. Bono climbs the scaffolding; Bruce IS the scaffolding. WINNER: BRUCE.

SEMIFINALS

(1) MJ vs (4) SPRINGSTEEN. 1984's two titans — the two albums that spent that entire year armwrestling atop the charts. Bruce throws seven singles off one record; MJ answers with seven off of Thriller and the gloves literally sparkle. WINNER: MJ. (2) PRINCE vs (6) WHITNEY. The One-Person Band champ against the greatest instrument in the building. Whitney takes two rounds on pure voltage. Prince responds by playing every position on the floor at once — writer, guitarist, producer, dancer — and the versatility cards stack up. WINNER: PRINCE. Whitney exits on a note that's still ringing; the commission logs it as ongoing.

THE FINAL: (1) MICHAEL JACKSON vs (2) PRINCE

The bout the entire decade was secretly rehearsing for. The professional rivalry, on the record, settled in the ring. Prince fights like the belt is beneath him and the fight is the art: guitar in one hand, falsetto in the other, undefeated in this building and never once out-WORKED. For six rounds it is dead even and the judges are sweating through their tuxedos.

Then the ninth round happens: Motown 25 in miniature. The hat. The glide. The single sequined glove catching the arena lights like a signal flare. Thriller sold more than any record ever pressed — the all-time mark, set inside this decade — and MTV was rebuilt in this man's image while his rival was still painting the Corvette. Prince made the decade ARTIER. Michael made the decade HIS.

1980s ERA CHAMPION: MICHAEL JACKSON

The video decade crowns the man the video was invented for. Prince exits undefeated in his OWN bracket, on a purple motorcycle, into fog that was not there a moment ago — the belt changes nothing about the ledger: One-Person Band remains SWEPT.

WINNER — THE 1980s — MICHAEL JACKSON — VOL1 — 7/11/26 — CANDIDATE (MIXED)

The video decade crowns its inventor.

CONFETTI. THE CONFETTI MOONWALKS.

The case: Thriller — the biggest-selling album in the history of recorded sound, a record set inside this decade and never touched since. Seven singles off one LP. The music video elevated from commercial to CINEMA, and a television network's entire identity rebuilt around one man's silhouette. Motown 25: five minutes of live television that taught an entire planet the same dance move by morning.

The road: through Public Enemy's siren, past Springsteen in a semifinal rematch of 1984's chart war, and over PRINCE — the undefeated, the One-Person Band champion, the rival — in a final that was even on all cards until the ninth round turned into a coronation.

The booth wants the record to show: Prince lost nothing tonight. His bracket remains swept, his belt remains his, and his exit — purple motorcycle, unscheduled fog — was scored 10-10 by both judges out of sheer awe. The rivalry ends the only way it ever could: both men iconic, one man CHAMPION.

The ledger now reads: Dancers TF belt, and the 1980s ERA BELT. The banner goes up next to a single white glove, which waves.

MJ–Prince: The Rivalry, Ring-Legal
Prince lost nothing tonight. Rematch teased — not booked.
